Etiquette & Kaepernick

15colin-kaepernickNFL player Colin Kaepernick has created a media storm for protesting police brutality and inequalities in America for minorities by sitting down during The National Anthem, which is played before every NFL game. Though the NFL organization states players are not required to stand, many people have become angry with Kaepernick, calling him a traitor and his protest tactic disrespectful. Is Kaepernick practicing good etiquette or promoting disrespect for his country?

Unlike many other countries, The National Anthem statute is a request not a law. Kaepernicks’ first amendment right surpasses all naysayers and 36 U.S. Code § 301 – National Anthem. Good etiquette is respecting other people, listening, and treating a person the way you want to be treated. With a history including slavery, Trail of Tears, and suffrage, we all know America has not treated all citizens equally. Therefore, Kaepernicks protest is legal and encouraged. United States civil rights laws changed in 1964 by protest and government attention, not from people hoping other people “do the right thing.”

Every American citizen should feel passionate when holding their hand over their heart and singing the national anthem. If a person does not feel the same passion as you may, and shares why, don’t tell them to “shut up.” An American Citizen with good etiquette will listen and help their fellow man achieve the rights he so desires. A true American would encourage the entire United States to live up to the lyrics of The National Anthem they hold so dear.

Slut Shaming

Flyy Girl Slut Shaming

We have been hearing a lot about slut-shaming in the media lately. What is labeling a person as a slut?  The act of making a woman or girl feel inferior or guilty for her sexual behavior, social situation or clothing because it deviates from traditional societal expectations is called slut shaming.

I hate slut shaming. It’s when a person slaps the scarlet letter “S” on a woman, or girl to define her as having so little intellectual worth that they label her as a person who must use their body or sex for public adulation, i.e. dressing like a whore, sounding trashy, and having sex. Slut shaming is what people do a female when they don’t want to deal with a deeper issue that reveals something about themselves.

If you watch Atlanta Housewives, follow the Amber Rose, Khloe Kardashian and Kanye West banter, and many comments on social media you are well aware that we use slut shaming as a way to silence a woman. Slut, whore, hoe, tramp, THOT are labels we have all heard and probably said. An attack toward a female is always to stop her in her tracks and stifle her voice. Why does society label women as sluts and whores? Because it works. Women are so scared to be labeled as a bitch, a hoe, or a slut we bite our tongues. We also use slut shaming to keep a person in the group we think they belong to. The snobs, the poor folks, ghetto are all pushed toward slut labels as a form of bias.

In an Armstrong and Hamilton 2004 college slut-shaming study the women had different conceptions of what constituted a campus slut, with the low-status women pinning sluttiness on “rich bitches in sororities,” and the high-status women aligning sluttiness with women they perceived as “trashy,” not “classy.”

We can look at the current slut-shaming fights in Hollywood. Amber Rose verses Kloe Kardashian Twitter war is an example. The 30 showers Kanye West said he had to take after being with former stripper, Amber Rose, just to date and marry wealthier Kim Kardashian, top selling sex video personality. Have we heard anything from Amber Rose’s Twitter account since? Keep in mind Amber Rose only stated her dismay about a twenty-five year old man dating a minor aged Kardashian.

I write this piece to not point fingers. I want all of us to look at how we ingroup, shame, and mute each other.

Survive a winter storm without killing your family & friends.

The winter blizzard of 2015 makes me giddy when I think about staying home from work and watching beautiful white snow fall. But, as soon as a few hours pass I begin to catch cabin fever. I wonder how I’m going to survive hours and days stuck in the house with my family. Ugh, the terror. Well, if you’re anything like me you will appreciate my tools for surviving a snow storm with your family.

⛄️ Stock the house with goodies: Food, games, movies, firewood, wine (for adults), hot cocoa, and candles. People are happiest when busy, distracted, warm, and full.
️Avoid arguing at all cost. Cabin fever will hit after a day of being stuck inside. You and your housemates will get annoyed with each other, it’s okay. Breathe, grab a cookie and a drink.
⛄️ Keep birth control handy… if you’re not planning to get pregnant. Keeping cozy during a storm results in fall babies.
Get a full tank of gas in your car. When the roads are clear you will want to get out for some new scenery or restock on food.
